How to make a pencil line effect in PS

Brian showed me the other day how he made a pencil effect in PS so he can sketch in it. I just use Alias but if you want to use PS you can. Here is a video of a guy doing it. His art sucks major ass but he at least got the pencil effect.

Repost from Sketchbook

Downloading PS brushes is really easy, installing them is even easier. The file that the brushes are located in are called .abr files. You can download them off the internet for free and simply drop them in the brushes folder which is located in the presets folder in your PS folder. Drop it in there while PS is turned off. When you activate PS go to your brush palette. If it's not already open look under "window" which is in the menu bar up top. Brushes should have a check next to it. Doing this makes that particular menu visible. In the Brush menu click the arrow button on the side. A list will pop up showing all the brushes in your presets and your new brushes should be in it. Choose "append" to add it to the existing set of available brushes or "replace" to remove all other brushes. Once you decide on which one you like you can customize and save them permanently in the "tool presets" which like the brush palette is also found under windows. They will be readily available to you whether or not you have that particular brush set loaded. You can give each of these a name that is easily recognizable to you. Before I found this feature I was wasting all my time re-customizing my brushes every time I opened the program. The brushes were gone when I would re-open PS. This feature works for all Photoshop tools.

Peep this cool tutorial on creating a digital brush in Photoshop.

Drawing video

Sup everybody?! I put this little video together the other day of my drawing process. Now for the disclaimer: I was rushing and distracted. My cubicle is open and anyone can sneak up behind me. Also the people in my office are pretty loud. Anyway, enough with the excuses. I hope this will be the first of many drawing videos.

making comics

okay, i'm a total comics dork. that's a given... but i bought the new Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics, Reinventing Comics) book Making Comics... i'm doing the homer simpson drool all over it (mmmmmmm, tutooooorials)... he's a deep thinker and comic artist, applying his whole brain to deconstructing and teaching the art of (wait for it...) Making Comics!

i highly recommend it for the comics creators here...

Spin the Bottle with 3D Revolve | Adobe Illustrator

I just found this tutorial for mapping in Adobe Illustrator that came about a month too late. It's a good one to have so I hope you guys and gals can use it.Spin the Bottle with 3D Revolve | Adobe Illustrator: "In this tutorial, I'll be discussing some of the ins and outs of the 3D Revolve Effect by rendering a three dimensional wine bottle with a label. This Effect allows you to revolve an outline profile of the right side of an object around a center axis to create a 3D object. Considering how simple the feature is to use, the results are really quite remarkable."

jazz drawings

I scanned in these 2 sketches from an old pad of mine. The drawings are about 4 years old or so. I was drawing out of a book full of black and white images of jazz artists. I dont know the names of these 2 guys.

Excellect studies. It's something about seeing a persons old work. I'tsssssss - Oh I don't know. But, never the less, these look like prominent men. Perhaps fraternity founders or something. The seem to have a mission in they eyes.

What is it like?

This fall I will be starting to learn some of the basics in animation. It is funny how I feel like I am constantly starting over. Anyway I was curious as to how some of the animators on the board felt about working in the industry. How different is it from working in comics. If they enjoy it or if it is a love hate relationship.

Honestly I have always loved animation. It is the only reason I ever started drawing. Comics was always secondary and now that I am getting to chance to follow my dream I am curious about what kinds of experiences other have had.

Animation these days sucks here in atlanta. Pretty much dry. There are like two places really to get work from. One studio wont pay much since its flash animation,'98-'00 were the golden years here in atlanta. I'm just glad i'm not freelance anymore here.

wow seiously. It seems like the market is really drying up for the arts sometimes. I mean how can some one that is passionate about something get by without working at mcdonalds to make ends meet?
